The ignition coils are autotransformers that serve to supply electricity to the spark plugs. The coils have the fundamental task of increasing and reducing the voltage in the dialogue with the battery and, mainly, have the task of raising the voltage of the battery (12 V) to the thousands of volts required by the spark plug to activate combustion.
Type of coils:
* Classic coil, in which a single coil supplies the power to the spark plug assembly,
* distributor or double coil, consists of two coils and each of them supplies the energy to two other spark plugs,
* the coil of the strip of the distributor, is formed by a single block composed of two coils and each coil supplies the energy to two spark plugs. It is placed directly on the spark plugs.
* The independent double coil consists of two coils and each coil provides two spark plug power. Each coil is changed or replaced independently.
* The direct coil, is a type of coil that is applied directly on the spark plug. The impulse generated by the coils is immediately discharged into the spark plug, minimizing power losses. This type of coil is used in vehicles with fully electric ignition.
Symptoms of the defect:
* The engine does not start because the current is not enough to activate the spark plugs.
* Difficulty to start the engine (the car starts with difficulty)
* The engine shuts off after being turned on abruptly.
